Combining rotation curves and gravitational lensing: How to measure the equation of state of dark matter in the galactic halo

چکیده

We argue that combined observations of galaxy rotation curves and gravitational lensing not only allow the deduction of a galaxy’s mass profile, but also yield information about the pressure in the galactic fluid. We quantify this statement by enhancing the standard formalism for rotation curve and lensing measurements to a first postNewtonian approximation. This enhanced formalism is compatible with currently employed and established data analysis techniques, and can in principle be used to reinterpret existing data in a more general context. The resulting density and pressure profiles from this new approach can be used to constrain the equation of state of the galactic fluid, and therefore might shed new light on the persistent question of the nature of dark matter.

Dark Matter Halos as Bose-einstein Condensates

Galactic dark matter is modelled by a scalar field in order to effectively modify Kepler’s law without changing standard Newtonian gravity. In particular, a solvable toy model with a self-interaction U(Φ) borrowed from non-topological solitons produces already qualitatively correct rotation curves and scaling relations. Although relativistic effects in the halo are very small, we indicate corre...

Can quantum theory explain dark matter?

Certain solutions to a gravitational form of Schrodinger’s equation can yield stable, macroscopic eigenstate solutions having no classical analogue, with properties resembling those of dark matter. Some more tractable solutions show: (1) radiative lifetimes far exceeding the universe’s age, implying negligible emission and inherent stability w.r.t. gravitational collapse, (2) negligible interac...

Advances in Black Hole Physics and Dark Matter Modelling of the Galactic Halo Primordial Black Holes and Galactic Formation

One of the most important unresolved issues of modern physics is the presence of cold dark matter (CDM). Such dark matter appears to be essential in explaining the observed galactic rotation curves and the missing Cosmological dark matter. Recent attention has focused on galactic halos as an explanation of the galactic rotation curves, and on the possibility that galactic halos may consist of m...

Can galactic observations be explained by a relativistic gravity theory?

We consider the possibility of an alternative gravity theory explaining the dynamics of galactic systems without dark matter. From very general assumptions about the structure of a relativistic gravity theory we derive a general expression for the metric to order (v/c)2. This allows us to compare the predictions of the theory with various experimental data: the Newtonian limit, light deflection...
